I can no longer access two of my favourite sites, because the captcha challenge never leads to the opening of the site, once you complete the challenge, they tick, showing proof your not a Bot, but then the site never opens, just another captcha! Really frustrating.

The captcha will slow the bots by a HUGE amount i dont think you realise that. I would never just let someone register on my site without trying to stop bots. Its like saying “Well the police is anoying as hell and they dont stop all criminals so lets not use them”. I can send a register request in milliseconds to a site without captcha. If i utilised many threads at once i would be able to flood the database pretty quick. Then you might say i will just ban their IP that solution may work if the person doesnt own a proxy.

In a current project I have a multi-step form. Step 2 is a dynamic configurator where elements have to be dropped to container which will then create hidden form elements. There is no other way to add these (form) elements. So a robot won’t be able to submit a form without it being invalid. On step 3 there was a CAPTCHA. But regarding step 2 I see no sense in keeping it at all.

I think captchas r annoying and often time-consuming; sometimes, the letters r so scrunched together that it’s hard to tell whether it’s a letter or a number!!

Is the only purpose to Captcha to stop bots? Is there no financial incentive for the web site? How can we the pubic combat captcha?

While the new recaptcha from Google should be pretty complex for bots to break it, it is also very user friendly. Mostly that one click is enough as proof for the mechanism behind it that a human is a human.

Besides that nobody should hate captchas for being 'kinda hard to solve' or 'time consuming' because – even if breakable – they help a lot getting rid of bot generated mails etc.. I wonder how one can see the disadvantages outweighing the positive aspects which in my eyes are pretty worth the set up.

Still interesting post, you should write it again with focus on the new reCaptcha!
